What would you do if this was your last day?
What are you doing right now?
What could you be doing?
What is the point of sitting there thinking about the meaning of life because, while you are pondering, there it is, slipping away, rolling away from you and you will never catch up!
Ticking clocks tell you the time but will also give you an idea of time you are wasting!
It has taken me 85 seconds to write this.
Am I wasting this time or is this worth it?
Today I felt the weather was too wet to go for a walk and immediately reached for my phone. How much time do we loose, browsing futile fantasies online? After 5 minutes I felt a sense of disappointment, put on my shoes and a jacket, and off I went. By the time I reached the park the sun had come out. The grass was sparkling and daffodils are starting to bloom.
When they rain started again I appreciated the shelter under a gorgeous pagoda. The pagoda’s original purpose, for Buddhists, was to house relics and sacred writings but for me, it was simply a beautiful place to contemplate how lucky I am to be alive.
We tend to look at the clock when we are in a hurry, have an appointment, suddenly, time is everything but when we are doing something we enjoy, on a day off, a walk in the park, we don’t notice the passing of time.
I love telling stories, listening to the tales of others whether they are laughs or woes, highs or lows, they are all part of who we are. We need to take the rough with the smooth, be thankful for the time we have. It’s important to stop spending it as if it’s plastic currency which is infinite and abundant, when really, life is fragile, limited and a debt that can never be paid back.
Part of being a humanist is believing death brings a natural end to our existence. Even if I’m wrong and there is some, big, surprise in store, I am not taking any chances.
Why would I?
If you go to a fairground and have an unlimited access for 2 hours and it cost you £100 would you spend 90 minutes on the slow, jaunty carousel?
No, you would probably make the most of it and go on as many fast rollercoaster rides as possible.
Why then, would you waste a minute of this fabulous rodeo called life?
You only have one so live it to the full!
