Civil Celebrant – Responsibilities

Have you chosen your celebrant?

What are they responsible for?

What is important

What are the responsibilities of all types of celebrant with regard to the actual ceremony?

For the actual ceremony celebrants must take into account the framework of the ceremony and follow the client’s instructions. Having suggested any additional content needed to be clear the client has agreed to it before proceeding, preferably in writing. The order should be created to include any readings, speeches, music and the script should include any relevant information regarding announcements regarding venue, times with relevant health and safety information on the venue. Sometimes a risk assessment needs to be carried out and this might also be expected from the Celebrant.

The list of tasks expected need to be covered or the celebrant needs to be aware of who is responsible if it is not themselves directly answerable for the possible outcomes to any problem that could arise.

Music chosen by the client could be live or pre-recorded and the celebrant could be responsible for the hiring of musicians so it is good to have a directory of possible entertainers for this purpose. For example, People in Scotland could require a piper and it is good to have one on speed-dial if you know this is a possibility. Funeral directors and wedding planners will have these things in place but it could be the celebrant is called upon to arrange some of this.

Creativity comes into play here when creating a script or order of service as it becomes a record of the event and people often like to keep this as a memento. This can also record the details of the Celebrant and acts as a means of future means of contact with others who might call upon your services so it is important for many reasons to make it professional looking and worth saving as a memorial document and a reflection of the service provided.
